SPJ Region 1 Conference: Practicing Journalism in Dangerous Times

The conference starts at 12:15 on Friday with a single session presented by Richard Drew whose photo “Falling Man” is still controversial after more than 15 years, and David Hansue, on covering terrorism.


Heather Taylor of the Dow Jones News Fund on facing your fears in a new job or your first job.

Representatives of the DART Center on covering traumatic stories, especially suicide
Michael Savino on investigative reporting with an emphasis on health care covering.

Michael Fitzgerald of Boston Magazine with a panel of science and technology writers on the challenges of covering these topics in political times.

Andrew Seaman, SPJ national ethics chair, on ethics in today’s uncertain times.

Conference Hotel

A 20-room block is available at a discounted rate for conference attendees at The Watson Hotel, 440 W 57th Street, New York, N.Y. 10019. The Watson (formerly a Holiday Inn) is located within walking distance of the conference site, John Jay College of Criminal Justice at 524 W 59th Street. 

The discounted rate is $219 plus tax for single or double occupancy with one king bed or two double beds. There is a $20 charge for each additional guest after the second guest. Rollaways are an additional $25.

The rate is valid for the nights of April 6, 7 and 8. The cut-off date for reservations is March 16.
